Why the feet of over-50s swell on hot summer days, and the hidden reason behind it

You've probably already tried most of what's out there

Why your feet swell more in the heat (and why it isn't your age)
This isn't your age catching up with you. That heavy, swollen feeling is mostly fluid pooling. And fluid responds to gentle, graduated support far better than to another insole.
It turned out to be the one layer nobody ever checks
Here's why everything else only did half the job

What makes the Archly sock different
Gentle graduated compression
FOR SWELLINGA firmer, graduated knit around the ankle gives that heavy, settling fluid somewhere to go, so your feet feel lighter and less swollen by evening, even on hot days.
Targeted arch support
SUPPORTGently lifts and supports the arch where the strain begins, working with every step, not only when you sit down. Your feet stay supported morning to evening.
Low-cut, all-day comfort
COMFORTA breathable, low ribbed knit and cushioned heel keep them cool in summer, and they pull on as easily as an ordinary sock, even on wider or swollen feet.
The difference people notice
BEFORE
AFTERBy July my ankles used to disappear. Not this year.
I'm a ward nurse, twelve-hour shifts, and every summer my ankles would puff up so badly my shoes left deep marks and nothing fit by teatime. First hot week wearing these and that heavy, swollen feeling just eased right off. I could still see my ankle bones at six in the evening.
BEFORE
AFTERFirst hot summer in years I've enjoyed being on my feet
I'd stopped my evening walks because by the end of a warm day my feet felt like lead. I assumed that was just how it was now. These have quietly changed that. My feet feel lighter and I actually look forward to a walk again.
BEFORE
AFTERHonestly, I was sceptical
I've been sceptical about everything for about four years. I wore them one week just to prove they wouldn't work. Had to keep wearing them because by the second week my feet stopped swelling up like they used to. Annoying when something just works.

Where to find them

I stopped my summer evening walks a couple of years back because my feet just could not take the heat by then. Did one last week and only realised halfway round that I had not thought about my feet once. Bit emotional about it, if I am honest.

Karen, this is exactly me. It is the walks in the summer I miss the most.

Do these fit wider feet? Mine swell quite a bit by the evening and most socks leave deep marks on me.

Same here, wide feet and puffy ankles, and they are the comfiest socks I own now. No marks at all.

I used to kick my shoes off the second I got through the door. Realised yesterday I had had mine on two hours after getting home and completely forgotten about them. Small thing. Does not feel small.

The forgetting is the bit that gets me. You do not realise how much you brace yourself for that ache until it is not there.

It is the heat that does me every year. Come July my ankles are like balloons by teatime. Three weeks in these and I can actually see my ankle bones again of an evening. Did not think I would type that sentence.

Barbara, balloons by teatime is the most accurate thing I have read all day.

Sheila, I wish I was joking. Every single summer without fail.

Bought these for the wife, she is a nurse on 12-hour shifts. She has now bought two more pairs and hidden them from me so I cannot borrow them. Take that as a review.

I will be honest, I only tried them to prove my daughter wrong. Annoyingly she was right. My feet are not swollen and heavy by bedtime the way they always used to be.

Ha, this made me laugh, my daughter nagged me into trying them too. Hate it when they turn out to be right.

How long did it take the rest of you to notice a difference? I am on day 4, hopeful but not sure yet.

It took me about a week and a half, Angela. Stick with it and wear them every day, that is the trick.

Thank you both, that is reassuring. Will keep them on.

I nearly did not bother. My sister asked what I had changed because I was not moaning about my feet for once. Nothing, I said. Just my socks. She did not believe me.

Margaret, that made me smile, my sister is exactly the same, moans about her feet every single summer and blames her shoes.

Do they get hot and sweaty in the summer? That is my worry with anything compression, I cannot bear a thick sock in the heat.

I had that exact worry too, honestly they are cooler than my normal socks. No sweatiness at all.

First summer in a good while I have not dreaded being on my feet, to be honest. They used to feel like lead by the end of a warm day and now they just do not, most days.

Retired now but I garden most days and by evening I could barely stand. These have made the evenings so much easier. I only wish I had found them years ago.

Oh the gardening leaves me in bits by the evening too, might have to give these a go.

On my feet all day on a shop floor. They used to throb by lunch let alone home time. Big difference wearing these. Only wish they did more colours.

The sock marks. I used to have deep red rings round my ankles every single night that itched for hours. Barely any now. Such a relief.

Yvonne, yes. I thought I was the only one bothered by the marks, horrible itchy things.

Ward nurse here. Every summer my ankles would puff up so badly nothing fitted by the end of a shift. First hot week wearing these and that heavy, swollen feeling had really eased off. I live in them now.

Sandra I am a primary teacher, 52, on my feet all day and my ankles are just the same by home time. Good to know they hold up on a hard day.

I did not expect anything from these, I only kept them on out of stubbornness after paying for them. Somewhere around the third week I realised my feet were not throbbing of an evening. Still a bit put out that they worked.

Diane, my wife was the same, convinced it was money down the drain right up until it was not.

Question, can you wash them normally or do they lose their stretch? Do not want to spend money on something that goes baggy after a month.

I have washed mine loads and they are still like new, no bagginess at all.

Flew down to see my son and normally my ankles are awful after a flight. Wore these the whole way and it was the best my feet have been after travelling in a long while.

Are they alright if you are on your feet all day at work? Care assistant, 49, constantly on the move and my feet know about it by home time.

Marilyn I am a nurse and swear by them for exactly that. You will be grand, honestly.

Bit of a daft question, do you wear these with normal shoes or just around the house? Do not want to buy them and find they only go with trainers.

Wife has had swollen ankles for years and tried everything going. The elastic on her old socks used to leave a deep groove round each ankle every night, barely marks her now. She is happy so I am happy.

I had more or less made my peace with it being my age, so I did not expect much. My ankles are not puffy of an evening the way they were though, which has rather surprised me.

Honest review, they are not cheap and it took me the best part of three weeks before I noticed much, I nearly sent them back. Glad I did not in the end, my feet are a good deal less swollen by evening now, but do not go in expecting overnight.

My feet do not ache at the end of the day the way they did and I keep forgetting that is even new. Thank you for writing this, it made sense of something no one had really explained to me before.
